Finding a Tax Attorney Near You: What Location Means and Does Not Mean

You searched for a tax attorney near me. Here is why location matters less than you think for IRS cases.

Location Matters Less Than You Think

When you search for a tax attorney near me, you are thinking about convenience. That makes sense for a lot of legal matters. You want a divorce attorney who knows your local court. You want a real estate attorney who knows your county recording office. But IRS cases are federal. The same Internal Revenue Code and the same IRS procedures apply whether you live in Tampa, Florida or Tulsa, Oklahoma.

What Actually Matters

Experience with your specific type of tax problem matters more than geography. An attorney who has handled 500 offers in compromise is going to get a better result than a local attorney who has handled five, regardless of where either one is located. IRS representation is done primarily by phone, fax, and mail. Meetings are almost always virtual.

When Local Matters

There are a few situations where a local attorney has an advantage. If you have a revenue officer assigned to your case, having an attorney who can meet with that revenue officer in person can be helpful. If your case is going to Tax Court, having an attorney who regularly practices in your Tax Court session saves travel costs. If you are facing a state tax issue in addition to federal, you need an attorney licensed in that state.

How to Evaluate Remotely

Phone and video consultations are standard in tax practice. During your initial consultation, ask about the attorney's experience with your specific issue, their success rate, their fee structure, and their communication process. A good tax attorney will be transparent about all of these things. Geography is the least important factor in choosing the right representative for your IRS case.
